The Durham Soil and Water Conservation District continues to maintain a very strong Environmental Education Program. Through this extensive program the staff and the District Board of Supervisors reach out to a diversified group of people including all ages of school children, adults, and every race and religion.

Some of the things we do include:

v       Teacher’s Newsletter  - Annual newsletter for Durham County teachers and educators highlighting District contest and programs for County school age students

v       Poster Contest – open to all 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Durham County students

v       Essay Contest – open to all 6th grade Durham County students

v       Public Speaking Contest – open to all 7th and 8th grade Durham County students

The purpose of these contests is to give students the opportunity to display their conservation knowledge and to educate others on conservation issues while being creative and displaying their writing and public speaking abilities.

v       Envirothon – Opportunity for Durham high school and/or middle school students to compete with others from across the state in their knowledge of natural resources. Teams are tested on soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics, and current environmental issues.

v       Resource Conservation Workshop – the Durham SWCD sponsors on to two high school students each year to attend a week long camp on the campus of NC State University each June. Students get a taste of college life while learning about a wide variety of potential careers and areas of study in conservation and natural resource fields.

v       Annual Awards Banquet – culmination of each year’s environmental education efforts. Awards and recognition are given to all winners of our various contest held though out the year.
