The Office of the Sheriff runs a certified and accredited training academy for both its law enforcement officers and its detention staff. The academy is run in accordance with the N. C. Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission regulations. The training division conducts all basic training for the Sheriff's Office. Currently, BDOT (Basic Detention Officer Training) academies run approximately four weeks and BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) academies eighteen weeks.
The training staff manages and oversees the agency's field training program as well. The FTO program is designed to incorporate BLET philosophies with practical law enforcement activities. Supervised hands on field training and a standardized system of performance evaluation are essential to the process that is conducted for a period of at least 90 days, and not exceeding 120 days.
Training is also responsible for all in-service training and develops and administers both mandatory and optional in-service training programs for both sworn and non-sworn personnel. This Training unit also coordinates all "outside agency" or specialized training for members of the Sheriff's Office. Another responsibility that falls within this unit is firearms / weapons / range training. In addition, the training staff directs the Sheriff's Office Pistol Team.
An on-going part of the Training unit's responsibility includes recruitment for both sworn and non-sworn personnel in accordance with federal, state and the Office of the Sheriff's mission statement. |
