| This is a new program that is a cooperative effort between Durham County Sheriff's Office, Social Services and Durham Juvenile Services as partners in Durham's future and success.
In Durham an increasing number of our youth are showing an interest in organized criminal activity. This program is designed to provide a structured, fun and educational alternative to beginning a life of crime. S.O.J.A. matches at-risk juveniles with mentors who are experienced at working with young people and who are dedicated professionals.
The juveniles chosen for the program will first be identified by Social Services or Juvenile Services as needing mentoring. Once identified, the names will be given to the School Resource Officer and Drug Abuse Resistance Education Officer who works at the school the juvenile attends. The officer will consult with schoolteachers and counselors to confirm that the juvenile is at-risk of poor attendance, performing below their academic potential or dropping out of school. Once one or more of these requirements has been met, the Officer will review the behavior of the juvenile to determine if they and one of the officer volunteers can successfully work together. The juveniles chosen will then be given the opportunity to be mentored. The summer mentoring program will focus on interpersonal skills through organized group activities. |
