The Information Systems (IS) unit provides first-line computer support for all Sheriff, Detention and Administration computer users; planning and project management for all criminal justice technology requirements; acquisitions, installation and maintenance of computer and network services; technical liaison with county, city, state and federal agencies; computer security risk analysis and data security management; user training, technical writing, and fiscal budget planning.
During fiscal 1997-98 the IS unit implemented computerized incident reporting for all patrol deputies and detectives, replacing handwritten incident reports with on-scene electronic data entry. In addition, mobile computing capabilities were provided for DARE, SRO, and SCOPE officers.
This unit completed joint planning and project development for the Central Warrant Control system. This system networks all warrant services for the Magistrate, Sheriff, Police, Courts, and other local agencies, and interfaces directly with the state?s warrant database.
As part of the Durham Crime Cabinet?s Integrated Technology agenda, this unit recevied federal grant funding to replace outdated criminal, civil and inmate records systems and funds necessary to complete the remainder of the CJIN project, including computer-aided dispatch, wireless networking services, and direct query of state and federal criminal records.
