Preparing Your Home For A Hurricane

Protect your home:

  1. All windows should be taped or boarded up. Use plywood at least 1/2" thick.
  2. Make sure all doors, including garage doors, are secure.
  3. Wedge sliding glass doors to keep them from coming off their track.

First Aid for Your Home After the Storm

  1. Open all doors and windows. Don't smoke indoors.
  2. Check for gas leaks.
  3. Don't stay in your home if you feel its not safe. Secure it and find another place to stay.
  4. Spray paint your address and your insurance company name where it will be visible from the street, if there is extensive damage.
  5. The toilet may not work.
  6. Do not use electrical appliances until they are dry.
  7. Direct sunlight can warp wood furniture as it dries.
  8. Let plaster and sheetrock walls dry before attempting cleaning them.
  9. Don't throw out damaged papers or art; professionals might be able to restore them.
  10. Accidents after the storm cause many deaths. Use common sense and follow basic safety rules.
