Nutrition Division
The Nutrition Division provides a multi-faceted public health nutrition program that is integrated into the medical and educational services and the organizational mission of the Durham County Health Department.  Registered dietitians (RD) and licensed dietitians/nutritionists (LDN) provide nutrition services in clinical and community settings throughout Durham County.  Licensed dietitians/nutritionists are recognized as the qualified providers of medical nutrition therapy by the State of North Carolina.  For more information contact the Nutrition Division.
 

Clinical Nutrition Section

  • Individual nutrition guidance and medical nutrition therapy for children, teens, and adults on issues such as hypertension, elevated cholesterol, weight management, diabetes, HIV infection and food safety.
  • General nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy for women in their child bearing years, including prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding and post-partum nutrition.
  • Nutrition services for children with special needs, such as failure to thrive, developmental delays, and prematurity.
  • Clients of Aces II/Durham Community Health Network.
  • Child Care nutrition Consultation Services for participating child care centers and homes. 

Community Nutrition Section

  •  Population-based nutrition and wellness education outreach to residents of Durham County
  • Classroom nutrition, food safety and physical activity lessons ( DINE for LIFE ) in target elementary and middle schools where greater than 50% of the children receive free and reduced price meals. Intervention also includes healthy foods taste-tests, school-wide campaigns/promotions, environmental cues/displays, and nutrition information sent home to parents/caregivers.
  • Community wellness/nutrition programs targeting limited resource audiences ( DINE for LIFE ) through senior centers, churches, housing developments, homeless shelters) includes nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, quarterly newsletters to food stamp households, bus posters and information in local media.
