"Without the achievements of Public Health, our lives would be far more difficult and dangerous. In Durham, Public Health truly is "Every Where, Every Day, Every Body". |
The Public Health system as been so successful in eliminating many of the medical and environmental hazards faced by previous generations, that it has become almost invisible to everyday life. Most of the time you only hear about Public Health when the media reports a rare event such as a restaurant associated with a food borne illness or a case of bacterial meningitis. It wasn't too many years ago that these events were common and not very newsworthy. Imagine what life would be like for us without the presence of Public Health in just about everything we do.
Public Health is there when we turn on our taps and clean water comes out; when we confidently shop for groceries or eat in area restaurants; when our children are immunized against most childhood infectious diseases; when we take a flu or pneumonia shot; and when our sick and our newborns are visited in their home by Public Health staff. Public Health is in our schools, in our neighborhoods and in a host of other places as we live each day. The fact of the matter is that without the achievements of Public Health, our lives would be far more difficult and dangerous.
As Durham rapidly sheds it former reputation as the city that tobacco built and shapes its image as the City of Medicine, let's not forget the role that Public Health has played and continues to play in making our way of life the envy of most of the world. In Durham, Public Health truly is "Every Where, Every Day, Every Body". |
