Let's face it we as a society generate a lot of stuff from the solid waste we create on a daily basis to the rapidly changing gadgets that become obsolete in less time. The residents and businesses in Durham County are no different. In order to conserve and protect the physical environment of Durham and World the General Services Department incorporates waste reduction strategies in its daily operations in addition to fulfilling its role in providing waste reduction and recycling services for the citizens of Durham County.
It's the Law to Recycle!
Durham County leads the way in reducing waste especially through recycling due in large part to the disposal ban on the following items:
- Newspapers
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Aluminum and Steel Cans
- Glass Bottles and Jars
In the City and County of Durham it is illegal to throw these items in the trash! These specific items MUST BE RECYCLED!

Solid Waste Management Plan Update |
|
|
Solid waste is an important topic in North Carolina. As landfill capacity becomes scarce, effective planning and management of garbage and trash become critical for minimizing both the environmental, social and economic impacts for residents and businesses alike. The State of North Carolina tasks each of its 100 counties to produce an updated solid waste management plan at least every three years. Plans are required to address all aspects of solid waste management, including collection, disposal, illegal dumping and recycling.
Durham County adopted its most recent plan in June of 2006 (click here to see Page 1 to Appendix B, Appendix C to Appendix K and Appendix K to Appendix L). The plan included input from the public and from the Durham County Board of County Commissioners. |
Durham County is again working to update its solid waste management plan. The final plan document must be adopted by the County and be submitted to the state by June 30, 2009. Your input is strongly encouraged, and will be considered in the development of the 2009 plan update.
