Vial of Life

What is it?

Vial-of-Life is a program that was started by Durham County EMS in the spring of 2002.  Its purpose is to make important information readily available to emergency responders in the event of a medical emergency during which a patient is unable to communicate.  It contains information that helps paramedics determine if a patient is on medications or has medical conditions as they enter a home and there is no one to answer vital questions on behalf of the patient.  This information is vital in an emergency and not always available.  There is also information concerning an individual’s physician.  The Vial-of-Life is able to “speak” for you when you may not be able to.

How does it work?

Durham County EMS will provide participants with a refrigerator magnet, a medicine bottle labeled Vial of Life, and a form.  The form has areas for personal data, past medical history, allergies, advanced directives, current medications and emergency contact numbers.  The Vial of Life bottle is kept inside the refrigerator door to be easily located by paramedics.  EMS personnel will help participants fill out the form if needed.

How do I get one?

The Vial of Life is available by contacting the Durham County EMS, Education Department at 919-560-8287 x 214, or by stopping by Durham County EMS Station 6, 226 Milton Road in Durham, N.C.

How much does it cost?

The Vial of Life program is free to the public.  We encourage you to get one for each of your family members, especially those with extensive medical problems.
