In Durham County, 90% of all car seats are either installed improperly in the vehicle or the child is not properly restrained in the car seat. In addition to reducing the risk of severe injury to children involved in motor vehicle crashes, properly used car seats do save lives! To increase the number of children riding safely in motor vehicles, three Durham County EMS/Fire agencies offer a car seat education and inspection service to residents of Durham and surrounding counties.
During this educational session, parents and caregivers will be assisted one on one by a nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. The session includes helping parents and caregivers with the installation of their seat into their vehicle, and demonstration of the steps to properly secure a child in the car seat, Additionally, parents are given information about best practice guidelines for their children as they grow and general use of the seat. This service is free of charge and offered by appointment only.
It is best practice for children to use a booster seat until they are 4' 9" and this is why we encourage parents and caregivers to use discretion when moving their child from a booster seat before the child meets the criteria for lap and shoulder belt only.
