ELIGIBILITY If you are in a crisis situation, can verify that you are a Durham County resident and have children in your home, you may qualify for emergency assistance through the Durham County Family Crisis Unit.
SERVICES AVAILABLE
The Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) and Emergency Energy Program (EEP) are provided on a first come, first serve basis. Both programs are based on families having crisis and meeting income guidelines. These programs are only funded during periods of extreme high and low temperatures, and are used for primary sources of heating and cooling. Funding is limited.
The Direct Medical Program assists families in crisis with medication and some medical supplies. This program is for families that do not receive Medicaid. A family must not have any other source to pay for the medical need. Funding is limited. This service is provided through a grant from the Triangle United Way.
Big Sib Program Requests for a Big Sib should be made to the child(ren) or family's social worker. If you do not have an active social worker, apply for a Big Sib with Family Crisis. The applications are forwarded to the Volunteer Center of Greater Durham, which recruits people to serve as big siblings. Once a volunteer has been identified, a home visit is scheduled for the social worker and volunteer to meet the child and parent(s).

Food Pantry: The Family Crisis Unit stocks a limited supply of canned meats, vegetables, soups, peanut butter and crackers. Families who receive food through the Electronics Benefits Transfer (EBT) program are not eligible for food from the pantry.
The AEA Program assists with rent, mortgage and utilities. To receive assistance, a family must be:
Experiencing a crisis
Eligible based on income
Have a bill that is past due
Able to document the amount needed to prevent eviction or disconnection
If you rent, you must provide a lease with all household members names listed.
If you own your home, you must have a coupon booklet in your name, or a letter from the mortgage company stating the situation.
If you are attempting to move into a new housing situation, you must be experiencing a crisis.
Court costs cannot be paid.
If found eligible, you can be assisted with the maximum amount up to 30 days following the initial application. You will not be eligible to apply for this program again until 12 months from the last application.
The Low Income Energy Assistance Program operates from November through February. Everyone who applies and is eligible will receive a check. Checks are usually received during the first two weeks in February.
The DSS/Health Department Family Planning Project assists families in preventing unwanted pregnancies and planning their future children. The family planning worker assists families in scheduling appointments with the Health Department and in receiving information on various methods of birth control.
Medicaid Transportation is authorized for medical appointments only. To receive this service you must currently be receiving Medicaid. Please have your current Medicaid card available when you call.
The State Division of the Blind houses a full-time and a part-time social worker at the Department of Social Services to assist Durham County residents with services for the blind. If you would like to inquire about these services, please call (919) 560-8633 or (919) 560-8639.
