MUSEUMS

PROJECT NAME

BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Museum of Life & Science

This project will replace and enhance older outdoor and indoor exhibits including Loblolly Park, the Tree House, and the Geology, and Space exhibits.  This renovation will include an expansion of the gift shop and visitor amenities.

Parrish Street Museum without Walls

This project will communicate the legacy, themes, and stories of Black Wall Street through inspired works of public art and highly visible interpretative and artistic responses, while complementing the existing streetscape and generating pedestrian energy on Parrish Street.

Minor League Baseball Fan Experience & National Museum

This project includes the construction of a 60,000 - 70,000 sq. ft. facility that allows visitors to experience Minor League Baseball’s rich history.  Exhibits in the facility will blend artifacts and modern technology to trace the events of Minor League Baseball.

History Museum and Parrish Street Common Room Construction and Exhibit Cost (contingent upon plans being developed)

This project will consist of a museum of Durham’s history, located in downtown and operating in conjunction with other heritage sites in Durham County. The project includes design and construction of a facility and the development of a core museum collection.

The Parrish Street Common Room will be a place to explore the themes, alliances, artifacts, and partnerships of Parrish Street.  Revenues will be used to design and build an educational room and install exhibits.

BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Hayti Heritage Center

This project consists of a facility expansion that would increase its size by 13,200 sq. ft. and will create an enclosed plaza, a gift/coffee shop, new lobby area, recording studio/rehearsal space, and exhibition/gallery space.  Building improvements will include a renovation of the basement (St. Joseph’s Performance Hall) which houses the dressing area, green room, mechanical room, storage space, and kitchenette.

Civic Center Upgrade

This project consists of upgrades at the 120,000 sq. ft. facility which was built in 1986 and is located in downtown Durham on Foster Street.  Funds will complete the replacement of mechanical systems, roofing, wallpaper, paint railings, replacement of tile flooring and the ballroom sound system, interior painting, replacement of doors, trim, and carpeting in certain areas.

Carolina Theatre Upgrade

This project continues the upgrade of the 44,478 sq. ft. facility constructed in 1926.  Renovations include the replacement of aged, worn, and/or damaged carpeting, paint, plaster, and installation of new windows.  This upgrade includes new stage equipment, a new sound system in cinemas, and 35mm projection equipment.

Durham Arts Council Upgrade

This project upgrades conditions at the 52,000 sq. ft. Durham Arts Council and includes replacement of the HVAC system, roofing, damaged carpeting, paint, plaster, and water infiltration correction.

Durham Armory Upfitting and Exterior Improvements

This project would provide upfits including floor refinishing, a renovated kitchen, an upgraded audio-video system, and interior finish work.  Exterior improvements include demolition and addition of a new stamped concrete sidewalk and driveway, construction of a decorative masonry screen wall, installation of a canopied walkway to the entrance, new landscaping, and lighted pathways.

Durham Bulls Athletic Park Upgrade

This project upgrades conditions at the 152,610 sq. ft. Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  Project repairs include addressing the water infiltration and HVAC systems, deteriorated expansion joints, exterior masonry, and damaged finishes.

BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

American Tobacco Trail Upgrade

This project includes asphalt replacement on sidewalks and driveways, erosion and drainage control and fence replacement.

Environmental Education Center

This project will design and construct a "green building" Environmental Education Center with classroom space and meeting space at West Point on the Eno Park.

West Point on the Eno

This project upgrades West Point on the Eno, including the McCowan-Mangum House.  Project repairs include asphalt parking surface, erosion and drainage control, sub-flooring, HVAC, and water infiltration in house.

Pearsontown Trail Phase II

 

Phase I of the trail has been constructed (Elmira Park to NCCU), and land acquisition is complete for Phase II.  This project will allow for the construction of a trail stretching 0.75 miles between NCCU and the Hayti Heritage Center. 

New Hope Preserve / Hollow Rock Park

The project provides design and construction funding for a parking lot, convenience facilities and an ADA accessible trail loop.

Little River Corridor Acquisition and Facilities

This project continues land acquisition along the Little River and provides for two canoe and kayaking access areas and a parking lot and trail loop at the proposed Cain Creek access area.

New Hope Trail

Design and construction of boardwalks, bridges and access points for the 1.2 mile New Hope Creek Trail between 15-501 and New Hope Preserve.

Third Fork Creek Trail Phase II

 

This project will complete the planning and construction of the Third Fork Creek Trail between Southern Boundaries Park and the American Tobacco Trail behind Hillside High School.  This section of the trail will stretch approximately 2.0 miles.

West Ellerbee Creek Trail Phase II

 

Phase I has been constructed (Indian Trail Park to Westover Park) and land acquisition is complete for Phase II (from Westover Park to the Stadium Drive Trail).  This project will complete the construction of the approximately 0.85 miles of trail.

Durham County Stadium

This project includes general upgrades to locker rooms, installation of a track and synthetic field and additional restrooms.

Durham Central Park, East

The east side of the Durham Central Park remains mostly undeveloped and this project would complete the basic development of the east side in conjunction with the skateboard facility planned for that area.
