Vaccination & Licensing
North Carolina State Law (NCGS I30-I85) requires that the owner of every dog and cat four months of age and older has their animal vaccinated against rabies. In addition North Carolina State Law (NCGS I30A-I90) also requires that dogs and cats shall wear rabies tags at all times.

Failure to comply may result in seizure of the animal by Animal Control in addition to civil penalties. Redemption will then not be permitted until all fines and fees are paid and the animal will be vaccinated at the shelter at the owner's expense.

It is also required by the authority of the Durham County Animal Control Ordinance that each person who owns maintains possesses a dog or cat that is kept housed or maintained in this county shall procure a license for each cat or dog. The owner of every dog or cat that is kept within the territorial boundaries of this county for more than thirty days shall register the Animal Control Division within the thirty days of bringing the animal into the county.
